Assassin’s Creed IV gameplay trailer released

Ubisoft have released a new trailer showcasing some of the gameplay elements from Assassin’s Creed IV. The video is more a trailer than a demo, but it shows off the various locales that you’ll be visiting in the game, such as tropical islands, towns, and even diving underwater to search for treasure.

Plunge into the exotic world of The West Indies in 1715. During the Golden Age of Pirates, the seas were as lucrative as they were lethal… only the most cunning and ruthless of individuals could survive long enough to achieve wealth and infamy beyond their wildest dreams.

This is the world you will explore as Captain Edward Kenway. A Pirate trained by Assassins, he is fearsome, lethal, brutal, and a loyal captain to his crew. Edward lives in secrecy and battles alongside historical pirate legends such as Blackbeard and Calico Jack. But what truly motivates this dashing rogue and how is he connected to this suddenly sprawling pirate empire?

Despite Assassin’s Creed III being kinda disappointing for many, I’m actually looking forward to Black Flag, as long as they fix the following:

  • No more 6 hour tutorial missions please. Introduce gameplay elements when necessary and not all at once, otherwise chances are I’ll forget and never use them again eg. the hunting gameplay in AC3.
  • Have minigames that make sense. There were quite a few in AC3, but were confused due to the nature of the game’s themes. We got a whole bunch of colonial, native minigames that really didn’t fit well with the rest of the gameplay.
  • Ship combat is good, but have a better damage system. Because crouching to avoid cannon fire to my ship is asking for too much suspension of disbelief. Also, here’s hoping for ship customization.
  • Reward exploration. Viewpoints in AC3 felt kind of redundant. Now with the whole Caribbean setting, hopefully we can go searching for treasures on random islands (or diving as seen in the trailer).
  • Give us something unique and useful for searching out these treasures, similar to we had to unlock Altair’s armour from AC2.

  • Fix stealth gameplay.
  • Fix horse riding. I’m not sure that there will even be horses in this game, but comparing AC3 to it’s predecessor, getting around in AC3 was a massive chore.
  • Have a management component that makes more sense. The villa in AC2 was cool, because not only did you get a sense of achievement seeing your villa get upgrades, but you got the extra income from it too. I just didn’t get that from AC3, not to mention the Homestead was poorly laid out too. I’m hoping they have something here like crew/ship management, or even something more macro akin to a pirate empire.

That’s my list for now, but I’m actually hoping they go balls out and make this the greatest pirate game ever since Sid Mier’s Pirates. There are tons of gameplay elements from Pirates which could easily be put in this game, such as attacking various towns and fortresses, capturing and looting other ships, and trading.

Did you try the MP in AC3 and previous ACs? Any thoughts on that?

I played a bit of Brotherhood MP, but the gameplay never caught on to me.

Being good at that game requires way too much patience.
